Aspirin or Ibuprofen For A Headache? The Answer May Surprise You!

Aspirin is a pain killer that has been tried and tested by many for years, probably even for decades. Call it the usual request at the drugstore, but doctors have it the other way around, and most of them would prescribe ibuprofen.

The question now is, which one is better to cure a headache: aspirin or ibuprofen? Here are fast facts you have to know.

aspirin oneAspirin is a widely known medication because it’s been around since the 60’s. The world’s oldest analgesic is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug that reduces the inflammatory pain from common conditions like arthritis and toothaches. It’s also known to reduce headache and body aches.

One huge reason why most adults take aspirin is because it has this beneficial “side effect” for those who are prone to stroke and heart attack. The drug has the ability to thin out platelets that cause blood clots and block passages. This means that taking aspirin decreases the possibility of a sudden attack. However, it also has a harmful side effect like stomach irritation.

ibuprofen manyIt’s only in the mid 1970’s that ibuprofen became available in the market. Compared to aspirin, ibuprofen is an analgesic with a stronger formula, and it pharmaceutical companies have constantly improved products like Advil and Motrin for a long time now. The big difference between the two is that ibuprofen doesn’t have the platelet thinning capacity of aspirin. Which means that it won’t lower blood pressure, but it can be more effective in defeating aches and pains. It should be noted, though, that too much intake can damage the kidneys.

Now that aspirin has been compared with ibuprofen, it’s best to know your health condition to determine which is better to take. A prior condition with platelets can be limited with aspirin, while ibuprofen can do better as a cure for stronger aches and pains.
